Chapter three

Cooking Up Some Fun

For their last night here, we decide to make dinner at our place. Charlotte is a great cook, and she and Jane work on spinach, mushroom, and leek crepes with a Champagne cream sauce, while I make a fancy salad with baby greens, brussels sprouts, and chickpeas. Holden reads the Baudelaire, sitting at the kitchen island. Periodically, he cracks and eats pistachios, each time cleaning his fingers carefully before touching the book again.

He runs the edge of a cloth napkin along the line of one fingernail. “Hey Char,” he asks. “What’s ‘brouillards’?” His French pronunciation is fantastic—unexpected in a construction worker with a voice like a gravel truck in first gear.

She looks up from the stove. “It is like fog or mist.” With a knowing smile, she adds, “You are reading ‘La Geante’?”

There’s something akin to shock on his rugged angel face.

“Fuck, gorgeous… you’re so smart. You slay me.” He shakes his head with a smile of disbelief. “I don’t deserve you,” he mumbles in a tone of amusement, but I suspect it’s in earnest.

She peeks at Holden from her lowered gaze, stirring the pan. “What do you think of it—the poem?”

Closing the book, he sets it aside. “It makes me a little afraid.”

Jane and I exchange a look, and it’s fair to assume we’re the same amount of touched and surprised at his admission. To a casual observer, it doesn’t fit with this alpha, neck-tattooed mountain. But it actually rings true—the guy is surprisingly angsty.

Charlotte turns the flame down on the pan and goes around the island to him. Putting her hands on his cheeks, she says, “N’aie pas peur de l’amour, mon loup.” She kisses him.

Jane has retained her vacation-level French from a trip to Paris better than I have, but I’m pretty sure ‘peur’ is fear, and Charlotte is telling Holden not to be afraid of love. There’s silence—aside from Band of Horses playing quietly in the background—as she returns to the stove.

Jane clears her throat and speaks up, asking Charlotte, “Ignore the question if it’s too personal, but…” She flicks a glance at Holden. “Does he ever let you drive the bus? Like, um… sexually?”

Charlotte’s brows lift as she ponders the slang, and Holden’s look is unreadable—maybe a bit wary.

Jane clarifies. “Drive the bus is like… be in charge. Dominant.”

“Mmm, I see.” Charlotte picks up her wine and sips it with a thinking look. “My ’Olden is the most generous person I have ever met. Like this, yes?” She opens her palm flat, as if in offering. “I imagine if that were my desire, he would satisfy it. But…” Her eyes twinkle with sexy mischief, and she hides behind another sip of wine. “This is not my preference.”

“No?”

Charlotte emits a hum of laughter. “I am inflexible in this respect. From the neck down, as one might say, I like to cede all control.” She splashes a little more Champagne into the cream sauce and stirs. “How do you feel, lovely Jane, about bondage?”

“Oh.
